The Holy Spirit And Our Flesh

Galatians 5:16: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Our flesh always wants us to go the wrong way and the Holy Spirit always wants us to go the right way.

Romans 8:7, 9: Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Unbelievers, those who have not received Jesus do not have the Holy Spirit and they know nothing of the battle that goes on between the flesh of a believer and the Holy Spirit of God who dwells in them. We believers must be able to discern the differences between what our flesh wants and what the Holy Spirit wants. If we are honest, we will admit that there are times when even as genuine believers, it will be difficult for us to discern the differences. And our flesh is a clever deceiver.

Romans 12:1-2: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Colossians 4:12: Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

The good news is that while it can be difficult to know the differences between the will of our flesh and the will of the Holy Spirit, IT IS POSSIBLE.

John 7:17: If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

Proverbs 16:3: Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

Our commitment to the will of God and the forsaking of our own will must come before we will have the knowledge of His will. If you are not committed to the will of God you do not know His will. If we are committed to His will we WILL know it. Our commitment to God is somewhat like giving Him a blank check. When we know that His will is better than our own we will be willing to give Him that blank check.

If we are committed to His will we will be committed to studying the Bible and we will be committed to hearing it taught by His pastors and teachers. We will be committed to learning from their examples. We won*t be skipping church. The more we study and know the Bible, the more we will know the will of God and the more we will be able to walk in the Spirit.

When I am not sure whether I am walking in the Spirit or fulfilling the lust of my flesh, the Bible always has the answer. I must diligently seek it. When I am aware of other believers walking in the flesh I know that there is something missing in their knowledge and understanding of the Bible. The Bible is the text book and the Holy Spirit is the teacher. Make a commitment to the Bible. Get started studying it, never neglect it and never quit.
